I have had this problem for the last week and can not get rid of this annoying spyware. I have tried Norton, Adaware, Ewido, and Microsoft Antispyware. Thanks for the help i posted the log below:

Looks like you may have missed a step in the instructions Trey, as you still have Nail.exe in that last log.
Can you please go through them step by step, making sure you do everything they say. You must go into safe mode when asked and you must check your entire log for any mention of those file names. -------------------- - KiD

Hey Kid....i have RELIGIOUSLY followed your directions and can not get rid of this. It seems everytime i delete Nail.exe it comes back. The other files mentioned in your directions i could not find in the log during Safe Mode. Maybe this could be the problem, but i have looked at every name in each file that was in the log. Please help and see if anything else could be causing this.

- Go here and download Silent Runners.vbs.Run it, and post the contents of the log it generates. - Next, go here and download FindIt's.zip to your Desktop. Unzip the files and doubleclick on FindIt's.bat to run it. A text file will open when it has finished scanning; it may take awhile, so please be patient. Post the contents of that log in addition to the Silent Runners log. Finally, download Killbox from here. Depending on what the log files tell us, we may be using it shortly. |

Hello again trey, sorry about this man but you do seem to be having some very nasty issues dont ya. I know this is a pain, but could you run through the instructions once more, but this time when you are in safe mode and run HJT to get rid of stuff, can also check these entries.
Then while still in safe mode find and delete these:

Hey kid thanks for the extra advice. I deleted everything you asked. Nail.exe came back. My computer could not find C:\WINDOWS\System32\Searchx.htm or
c:\windows\system32\vxqlzvq.exe So nonetheless i still have my Aurora popups. One thing interesting i noticed.....c:\windows\system32\vxqlzvq.exe only appeared in one of my logs. It is the only file that has a lowercase c at the beginning of it. I looked at my first log and there was a different file that had a lowercase c. The newest log below also contains only one file that has a lowercase c. Each of these .exe did not exist in the other logs, perhaps the program keeps changing its name? Exactly- these infections are capable of "morphing" their filenames in order to make it more difficult to remove them. What's worse is that there is often a hidden "Mother File" (usually a .dll file) which controls the morphing and respawning of the infectious .exe files. This mother file may not be reported by HijackThis, and until you find and delete that file, HJT alone will not be able to fix the infections; they'll simply return at next reboot. Please download the programs I listed in my last post, run FindIt's and Silent Runners, and post their logs here. Those two programs are capable of uncovering malicious files that HijackThis can't "see". |

No sweat, and thanks for the Silent Runners log; it found what I was after. 1. Have HijackThis fix: F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lubwdt] c:\windows\system32\mcounrl.exe Do not reboot your computer until completing the steps below! 2. Unzip the Killbox utility that I asked you to download earlier to your desktop and run the Killbox.exe program. - Paste the following file path into the "...file to delete" box, click "Standard File Kill", "End Explorer Shell While Killing File", and "Unregister dll before deleting". Then click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle: C:\WINDOWS\System32\DrPMon.dll - Next, paste the following file path into the "...file to delete" box, click "Standard File Kill" and "End Explorer Shell While Killing File", and then click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle: C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe - Repeat the above process for the folowing two files: c:\windows\system32\mcounrl.exe C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe If you get no errors when you do the deletions, reboot your computer. - If any of the deletions fail, do not reboot yet! Instead: - Run Pocket Killbox again, paste C:\WINDOWS\System32\DrPMon.dll into the Delete box and click on "Delete on Reboot" and "Unregister dll before deleting". Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" DMR...i think you might be the sexiest man alive right now, Nail.exe is gone, there is one wierd file name with lowercase c still in the logs so maybe im not totally rid of it...but so far no aurora popups!

Sorry- I forgot to mention this in my last post: 1. You should also delete the following files from your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder: kill evidence1.ico killinternetpops21.ico mp3 players4sale1.ico 2. You should remove the Aurora reference from your Registry as well: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\aurora To do so: A) Make a backup of your Registry. Instructions from Microsoft on how to do that in XP can be found here.. B) Copy the text in the box box below into a new, blank Notepad document and save the file to your desktop as FixAurora.reg:
Double-click on the FixAurora.reg file to run it, and click "Yes" when prompted to Merge. C) Reboot once the merge is done. |

I... well... um... er... ah...   Doesn't look like we're quite done yet, though. 1. Have HJT fix: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ysvazwr] c:\windows\system32\nncjze.exe then delete c:\windows\system32\nncjze.exe, empty your Recycle Bin, and reboot. 2. I have the feeling there's still something else lurking around. After you do the above, please reboot and then give us a new HJT log, as well as logs from both Silent Runners and FindIt's. |

No kidding. The Nail/Aurora infection is one of the more persistent infections as well; it can be a real bear to remove sometimes (as we're finding out).  You'll need to print out these directions or save them into a Notepad file; you will be offline for this next round: 1. Download the free ewido Security Suite. Open the program, but don't do a scan yet; just use the online update function to make sure the program has the most current components installed and then close it. 2. Paste the text below into a new Notepad file and save the file to your desktop as FixDRPMon.reg (don't run it yet, though):
3. Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up) - Open a DOS window, type the following commands one at a time, hitting Enter after each. Close the DOS window when finished: regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DrPMon.dll attrib -s -r -h C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DrPMon.dll attrib -s -r -h C:\WINDOWS\nail.exe attrib -s -r -h C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe attrib -s -r -h C:\windows\system32\maxyhyg.exe del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DrPMon.dll C:\WINDOWS\nail.exe /fullremove del C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe del C:\windows\system32\maxyhyg.exe (If any of the above steps give you errors, make note of them and let us know what they were.) 4. Double-click on FixDRP.reg and click Yes when prompted to merge. 5. Run ewido and have it fix everything it finds in its scan. 6. Run HJT again and have it fix: - F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe 7. Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types". Search for the following files to verify that they were sucessfully deleted: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DrPMon.dll C:\WINDOWS\nail.exe C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe C:\windows\system32\maxyhyg.exe If any of the above files still exist, try deleting them from within Explorer. 8. Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally. 9. Run HJT, Silent Runners, and FindIt's again and post fresh logs. |
